Type: Monitor 50 Black 4G

  • Monitor Audio bookshelf speakers Black (pair)

The Monitor 50 is a compact bookshelf speaker from the British manufacturer. Drawing on several decades of innovation, this generation of the Monitor series delivers high audio performance in a compact and discreet format.

The gold dome tweeter and its waveguide

The treble is handled by a 25 mm C-CAM dome, an aluminum and magnesium alloy coated with a ceramic layer. This process produces a diaphragm that is both light and rigid, pushing its first resonance modes beyond the audible band and extending response up to 30 kHz. In front of the dome, a UD (Uniform Dispersion) waveguide broadens the horizontal dispersion of the upper spectrum. In practical terms, the tonal character varies less when the listener moves away from the central axis, which helps when the listening position is not ideally centered.

DCM technology applied to the woofer-midrange

The woofer-midrange range is based on a 130 mm cone, also made of C-CAM. Its geometry has been reworked and it incorporates DCM (Damped Concentric Mode) technology, damped concentric ridges stamped into the diaphragm. Their role is to control cone deformation as frequency rises, where a free diaphragm begins to vibrate in a disorderly way. The intended result is fuller bass and a midrange that remains clear. The crossover with the tweeter takes place at 2.5 kHz.

The HIVE-II port and placement flexibility

The bass-reflex port is placed at the rear and uses the HIVE-II profile: helical grooves carved into the duct that regulate airflow. The idea is to limit the turbulence responsible for chuffing noises when the bass hits hard. This tuning extends down to 40 Hz, a respectable low-end limit for a cabinet of this size. The tuning allows installation close to a wall, which is no small matter for a rear port. Still, a rear duct always benefits from a little air behind it: placed flush against the wall, the Monitor 50 will tend to boost the low end, and a few centimeters of clearance are enough to clean up the balance.

Sensitivity, impedance, and amplifier choice

The Monitor 50 has a sensitivity of 85 dB and a nominal impedance of 8 ohms. The sensitivity remains moderate: it is not one of those speakers that plays loud with a handful of watts, and it appreciates an amplifier capable of providing a little headroom. The 8-ohm load, on the other hand, is forgiving and poses no difficulty for any common integrated amplifier. Monitor Audio recommends power from 20 to 80 watts, with the driver handling 80 watts RMS. PureFlow internal wiring, in silver-plated oxygen-free copper, and gold-plated binding posts complete the connection to the transducers.

Stereo, home theater, and Atmos modules

Set up as a stereo pair, the Monitor 50 can also serve in a home theater system, as front speakers in a small living room or as side speakers in a more elaborate installation. Placed on top of each cabinet, a Monitor Audio AMS Dolby Atmos module adds a height channel by reflecting sound toward the ceiling, for soundtracks that make use of vertical channels. To free up space on the furniture, the FIX-M wall mount screws onto the rear fixing point and holds the cabinet flush against the wall.
